Kentucky Opportunity - Surg/Cyto/Hem

We are looking for an experienced AP/CP pathologist with strong diagnostic and problem solving skills who, in addition to practicing general surgical pathology and cytopathology, can take over the Medical Directorship of Hematology, and possibly Blood Bank, if interested. He or she should have excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working closely with the medical staff. The candidate would be responsible for signing out the vast majority of bone marrows received in the department. Our current bone marrow volume (100/year) is expected to grow. Our lymph node/lymphoma volume is approximately 40/year. Flow cytometry, including virtual flow, is available from Clarient Diagnostic Services or US Labs. We have an experienced crew of histotechnologists, a pathologist assistant, and state-of-the-art IHC capabilities (current antibody panel, including lymphoid markers = 50).

All of our daily work is performed at one location, so there is no traveling around covering outside hospitals. The hospital administration has always been supportive and the salary is competitive. The benefits are excellent, including 6 weeks/year for vacation/meetings, and a professional dues/books/travel allowance of $9,500/year. The hospital has its own defined pension plan, and also offers 403(b) and 457 tax-deferred retirement plans.

Hematology and Blood Bank have solid, experienced Medical Technologists who are a pleasure to work with. We have a School of Medical Technology, with 3 current students. All of the pathologists give lectures to the students, mostly Powerpoint type, in our classroom. The Medical Director of Hematology would be involved in one-on-one teaching with the students using the multiheaded microscope, in addition to the lectures. There are two active multidisciplinary tumor board conferences that meet weekly, one for general tumor pathology and one for breast cancer.

We are also very interested in improving our coagulation testing resources, especially platelet function testing. We have an active outreach program, and are implementing order entry in our client offices. We plan to upgrade the AP LIS to either Cerner Millenium or PowerPath next year.
